TEXT: A First Course in Abstract Algebra, 7th ed., by J. B. Fraleigh

BULLETIN:
Study of groups, rings, fields, vector spaces, linear transformations, selected topics, and applications. Prerequisite: MATH 289. Offered even years only.
OBJECTIVES:
After taking this course the student should have more than just a nodding acquaintance with the terms.  The student, in fact, should be able to construct brilliant proofs to known theorems and to conjure up new theorems and their concomitant proofs.  The final exam will include a test of the student's ability to leap tall buildings in a single bound.

EXAMINATIONS: 2 one-hour exams: 26 Jan (Fri)

1 two-hour final: 13 Mar (Tue 2-3:50 p.m.)
HOMEWORK: Assignments are due weekly on Friday; 10 points possible per problem.

Late homework is deducted at the rate of twenty percent (20%) per class day late --- see me about late work due to illness.
Paper should be approximately 8.5 by 11; one or both sides may be used.
Must be neat.
Must be done in pencil (or TeX, LaTeX, or AMSTeX) to be accepted.
Due at the beginning of the class period of the due day.
Papers are to be folded as a book with name and assignment number on the outside as illustrated.

GRADING: Homework: 30% of grade.

Hour Exams: 20% + 20% = 40% of grade.

Final: 30% of grade.
