[The
third
quarter of the] Study of groups, rings, fields, vector
spaces, linear transformations, selected topics, and
applications. Prerequisite: MATH 289. Offered even years only.
|
OBJECTIVES:
|
After
finishing
this course, the student should be acquainted with the
elementary properties of field extensions, have had an
introduction to Galois theory, and have seen connections
to applications in error-correcting codes and sphere
packings, with deep connections back into some of the
sporadic simple groups and the Simple Group Classification
Theorem.

HOMEWORK: |
Assignments are
due weekly.
|
|
TOPICS
&
ASSIGNMENTS
|
Late homework is deducted at
the rate of twenty percent (20%) per class day late --- see
me about late work due to illness. |
Paper should be
approximately 8.5 by 11; use one side only. |
Must be neat. |
Must be done in
pencil (Alt: Homework typeset in TEX
rewards the submitter with 2% extra credit per problem
-- what are you waiting for?)
to be accepted. |
Each problem is
graded out of 10 points.
|
Papers are to be
folded as a book with name and assignment number on the
outside as illustrated. |
GRADING: |
Homework: 30%
of grade. |
|
Midterm: 30% of grade. |
